A Muslim Wedding Tradition – The Sherbet

Food happens to be an intricate part of Muslim wedding traditions. Did you know that since ancient times the Rose Sherbet – a rose flavored refreshing drink, which can be called the soft drink of ancient times in the Middle East was symbolic of a bride’s acceptance of a groom. The bride’s family would server Rose Sherbet to the groom’s family when a marriage was set. It is no wonder that this pink colored beverage was the chosen drink, its color and aroma simply imbues romance and when served in a crystal vessel, it stands elegantly.

Since, then in much of the South Asian Muslim culture and as far as Afghanistan it is customary for the bride and groom to drink Sherbet as part of the wedding rituals. In these countries the famous Sherbet has taken the form of a milk based drink called Badam (Almond) Sherbet, which is infused with rose water and enriched with ground almonds.

Want to incorporate these romantic drinks into your ethnic or multicultural celebration? We have both the recipes for you. Keep in mind that alcoholic beverages are prohibited for Muslim people and you would not see any alcohol at a typical orthodox Muslim wedding. So, these are nonalcoholic beverages, which is a good option for the guests who want to skip the booze at your celebration. These recipes have been modified from lovefoodlifealchemy.com

Rose Sherbet

Ingredients

1 cup rose petals (pink or red). These petals are to be mixed with water

2 lbs. sugar

4 cups water

1 2/3 cups lemon juice

4 cups water

Method

Remove the yellow portion of the petals because they are bitter. Simply snip it off with scissors. Wash the petals under cool running water.

Stuff the petals into a jar.

Pour the lemon juice over the petals. Mix it around a bit with your hand to cover them all, then cover the mouth of the jar with a cheese cloth and tie it tightly. Leave it in a shady spot or in a cupboard for a week. If it is the summer time, 3 days will be enough. During this time, the scent and color of the petals will be transferred to the lemon juice.

Take out half the rose petals and add half of the sugar. Let this mixture sit for another week.

Now add the remaining sugar and the water and mix well. Strain the liquid and bottle it. The syrup should keep a good long while in the fridge.

To make the drink, pour ¼ teaspoon of syrup into a glass, top with water and add ice.

Great Themes for a Different Wedding

Your wedding day should stay in both yours and your guests memories for years to come, but with most weddings being very much the same it can be hard to make yours stand out in the crowd. Themed weddings are on the up and up and it makes perfect sense to make your big day a lot of fun for your guests alongside the significance of the ceremony. With that in mind, here are a few of our favorite wedding themes that allows everyone to break with tradition and dress up in fun costumes.

Gangsters and Molls

This is hugely popular as the sharp suited gangster easily fits ideal of how the groom wants to look and it allows the bride a whole different perspective when looking for her dream dress. Seek inspiration from classic gangster films to see what images you want put on your invitations and how you want the tables laid out for the reception. Guests will love to receive these unusual invitations and when it comes to the pictures you will put the Godfather to shame and everyone will put a massive effort into finding the perfect outfit – Red star Fancy Dress has a colossal selection of these 1920s costumes.

Hawaiian

While you don’t have to go the whole hog and ask your guests to wear surf shorts and grass skirts, the colourful flamboyance of these wonderful islands can shine through in other ways. The guests can be presented with lei as they arrive, exotic flowers can be in the brides and bridesmaid bouquets as well as the men’s buttonholes. You can even incorporate it into your reception menu with fresh fish, pineapple, fruit punches etc. If you are using a wedding planner you can also arrange to have the venues decorated to suit the theme, which will be so bright and cheerful it will put an instant smile on everyone’s face.

Gothic

Thanks to Twilight Gothic style is very much back in vogue, and also gives the bride the chance to wear a more flamboyant dress that your ordinary white one. Black and red are very much the order of the day at a Gothic wedding, but dark purples and earthy colours are also acceptable for guests. Drama is very much the key to pulling off a successful Gothic wedding, so everything from the invites to the flowers to the music should be in keeping with this theme, which is also a lot of fun for those who don’t normally dress dramatically.

Italian Villa

Bring a touch of Sicilian romance to your wedding day that will have everyone talking about it for all the right reasons. Lemon trees, stone statues, cream linen, that lovely light feel of the Mediterranean can be brought into your wedding whether you are getting married in Sunderland or Southampton. Light suits, soft pastels, Italian food at the reception this is a pretty simple theme to pull together yet one that will have a fabulous effect. Flowers in your hair, your handsome groom more casual and your guests awash with the wonderful pastel shades that Sicily is renowned for, who could ask for anything more on their wedding day.

Five Do’s and Don’ts When Selecting a Wedding Photographer

by Pauls Wedding Photographer

There are quite a few things to take into consideration when selecting a wedding photographer.  Sometimes we don’t realize how small things can ruin your wedding memories. Here are five pieces of advice when selecting a wedding photographer.

1.  Select an experienced photographer, who has done plenty of weddings, but make sure that they have good availability.  A photographer that is too busy and is booked every day of the week may be too burned out and may also take forever to deliver your photos.

2.  When cutting corners, don’t let it be the photographer.  A good photographer is valuable because those photos are going to be a lifetime of memories.  It’s worth investing and splurging on the photography for your wedding. If your favorite photographer is offering a deal, do take it.

3.  Don’t just depend on the venues recommendations.  Do ask for at least three references and check them.  Also, Yelp and websites like Wedding Wire are good places to start when looking for reviews.  Check for Better Business Bureau complaints as well.

4.  It’s important to make sure that your photographer is someone you feel comfortable with and that your personalities don’t clash.  This person is going to be by your side throughout every moment of your wedding and you want to make sure that you like them and that you can communicate well with them.  The last thing you need is to feel upset about the photographers attitude on your wedding day.  They need to understand what you want and accommodate you during the wedding.

5.  Don’t cut back on the second shooter.  Realistically, no matter how great your photographer is, they can’t be at two places at the same time.  If you don’t want to miss out on a special moment, do make sure to secure a second shooter.

Sterling Silver Wedding Jewelry

by Jewelry Kind

Sterling silver jewelry has been trending recently when it comes to wedding jewelry.  One reason for sterling silver to be gaining popularity is that it is much less expensive compared to gold or platinum.  Younger couples may opt for sterling silver wedding bands in order to stay within budget.  Sterling silver is very versatile and it will take finishes that are bright white to oxidized black or high polish to soft satin, which look great in your wedding photos.  Sterling silver is also a good choice when couples decide to make a romantic gesture and make their own wedding bands.  It is easiest to work with and great for texturing or stamping.

When it comes to wedding jewelry, sterling silver jewelry is primarily popular because of style.  Many people don’t like wearing yellow gold and platinum is usually reserved for wedding bands only.  Another good reason to select sterling silver is that many people are allergic to gold, but not silver.  However, sterling silver jewelry is very popular for bride’s maid gifts and bridal party gifts.  It is more likely to be re-worn when gifted for years to come.  Sterling silver can also be quite accommodating to a wedding budget, particularly when there is need for a significant quantity of gifts.

Classic sterling silver bracelets or earrings are a must have piece for any woman’s jewelry box and you can’t go wrong with a gift like that for your bride’s maids.  They will be able to wear it at the wedding and later for regular wear.
